"The F4F Wildcat began life on Grumman's drawing boards as a biplane. It nevertheless became the Navy's first monoplane fighter aircraft -- powered by a 14-cylinder Pratt and Whitney radial engine. Looking back from the 1980s , it was the essence of simplicity with its hand-cranked landing gear and vacuum-powered flaps. The F4F had no hydraulics and only a simple electrical system. But for its time, the Wildcat was as great a technical advance as was the introduction of jets 10 years later."
  • Foreword by Marion Carl, and ace with 16 1/2 victories in the Wildcat.
  • 113 photographs on quality stock
  • Exploits of the British version, the Martlet
  • Full appendices including data on both Navy and Marine Wildcat aces.

270 pages. A hard-cover with dust jacket (cover price $17.95), it contains lots of photographs and detailed information on the evolution of this aircraft. Has shelf-wear and nudges.
