"The F4F Wildcat began life on Grumman's drawing boards
as a biplane. It nevertheless became the Navy's first monoplane
fighter aircraft -- powered by a 14-cylinder Pratt and Whitney
radial engine. Looking back from the 1980s , it was the essence of
simplicity with its hand-cranked landing gear and vacuum-powered
flaps. The F4F had no hydraulics and only a simple electrical
system. But for its time, the Wildcat was as great a technical
advance as was the introduction of jets 10 years later."
