Today I have a piece of the past for your consideration... Chardenal's
Complete French Course is an Allyn and Bacon hardcover textbook
copyright back in 1892. Yes, this gem is 110 years old! It was
printed at Norwood Press by Berwick & Smith of Norwood,
Massachusetts.
The Fine Print: This textbook, by C. A. Chardenal (Bachelier es Lettres de L'universite de France) is the stated Revised Edition with Index. There is but one copyright date -- 1892. On a few of the pages are tiny notes. A former owner wrote there name on the first page of the book too. Please view the scan provided below. You will note that the cloth from the binding is no longer present. Yes, this is one of those stitched together books, versus the more cheaply glued ones of today. The book isn't very squishy either. :) Also, there were two sets of mimeograph sheets inside which belong with the book. They say at the top "Contea Dramatiques" and are vocabulary words and definitions. Anyway, handling the book is such a treat. The pages are still pliant... thin but not in any danger of falling out or anything like that. There are 378 pages in this book. It's a hard-cover. The thing is, this book weighs more than our modern ones -- it's got body so to speak. If you chose to use this book for its intended
purpose, in one fell swoop you could learn the language of lovers:
