W. C. Fields - His Follies and Fortunes

W.C. Fields is the life story of this century's funniest man -- a classic book about a classic comedian, star of "The Bank Dick" and "My Little Chickadee...". Written with a loving hand by Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lewis Taylor, this book offers both insight and lots of short clips about this great talent.

After all, "a man who hates dogs and children can't be all bad"....

From the first page:
"W. C. Fields was born William Claude Dukinfield, son of a London Cockney who migrated to Philadelphia in the late 1870's. At the age of eleven, Fields ran away from home... and became a pilferer, a jailbird, a juggler and -- in the opinion of  many -- the greatest comic artist the world has ever known.

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Robert Lewis Taylor tells Fields' whole incredible life story, from his days as a knockabout street urchin to his heyday as the celebrity who hobnobbed with King Edward VII (a fact from which Fields' father never fully recovered).

Here's the man who drank two double martinis every morning before breakfast, wrote "The Bank Dick" and "My Little Chickadee" on the backs of envelopes, left his money for the establishment of an orphanage "Where No Religion Of Any Sort Is To Be Preached." Here is the one and only W. C. Fields -- a man who successfully defied civilization for 67 years and became the beloved king of American comedy."

The Fine Print: Kidlet wrote a note on the inside back cover. Copyright originally in 1949, that was renewed in 1967.  This is the Stated Third Printing.  There is a note confirming that a that a condensation of the material appeared in "The Saturday Evening Post".

Small Note: the Saturday Evening Post is once again being published... you might consider subscribing. It's much as the old one was, though the size is now standard magazine size versus the larger ones of years gone by. Anyway, we really like it.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled description:
This paperback has a section with Black and White photographs. They include:

  • Fields as Micawber in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "David Copperfield"
  • The Young man of destiny; twenty years old.
  • With Baby Leroy in Paramount's "The Old Fashioned Way"
  • In the Broadway musical "Poppy"
  • Unusual fishing at Toluca Lake (using a golf club)
  • Fields in his mid-forties
  • In Universal's "My Little Chickadee" which co-starred Mae West

  • W. C. Fields -- "Sucker"
  • The imperishable Micawber -- from David Copperfield

Though the book is yellowing and showing her age a bit, it's the contents for which I collect books. This one has 286 pages with lots of great stuff about W.C. Fields. That's an amazing character to have come so far and achieved so much.  It's inspirational, and great fun to read too. :)
