Painted Seashells

In addition to stitching, I paint a bit -- okay, a lot, but really just a very little.

The Joy Page is a group of items that remind us of all that is good in the world. Some are amusing but many are poignant so you might want to have tissues handy....

     Separating Threads of Silk

Please note: This page is photo intensive... please wait for the pictures to load. Thank you.

Silk has a tendency to snarl -- and separating the threads was the bane of my existence for quite some time. I do absolutely love the Waterlilies line by Caron of silk floss (simply scrumptious) but getting one strand of floss from twelve (versus the usual six of DMC) wasn't a strong suit.

Now to get silk out of the skeins, it's a bit trickier than with regular floss. This is my method which works for me:
First, take the end of your skein in your hand...
Next, get one thread and hold it tight.

NOW, (and this is the semi-tricky part) hold that single strand and then push down your skein until you have the length of floss you want.
Specifically, unlike regular floss where you can hold one thread and then hold the rest and it all sort of unwinds neatly, THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN WITH SILK and you'll be sorry.

Cut the single strand of floss close the the rest of the skein.

Finally, the rest will straighten itself all out if you give it a push/pull.

Smooth, and it's all back the way it was, ready for your next adventure in silk. Happy Stitching!

Voila! You're an expert now. Happy stitching...
Of course, you might wish to drool over some of the lovely hand-dyed flosses...
These are primarily by Caron - the Waterlilies are my favorites.
